Sometimes you may think that you only have a simple cold. But there can be many cases in which your cold will stay with you for a good few weeks, and you may even feel your sinuses acting up. A sinus infection might result if you do not act promptly on your cold, and this happens when excess mucus begins to drip down your sinus cavities or down the back of your throat. And because colds and acute sinusitis have several analogous symptoms, many think of them as one and same. You would often realize that you are suffering from anything but a simple cold when the symptoms worsen and you finally decide to see your physician.
Your cold is sinus related if your condition is characterized by runny nose, cough, nasal congestion, mild headaches, post nasal drip, fever, swelling around the nose, eyes and cheeks, fatigue and sore throat. Other manifestations of a sinus attack would include a painful or swollen throat, an itchy nose and either pain and/or swelling in the nasal area. A sinus-related headache would usually be characterized by pain in the facial area below the eyes and in the forehead. Note that symptoms of sinusitis in children are less explicit. They may suffer from what appears to be a common cold for over ten days. In addition, they may constantly look and appear to be sick and their noses may emit a discolored discharge.

Another way to avoid sinusitis would be to avoid engaging in stressful endeavors. Oh, and by the way, if you smoke, quit if you could, and avoid external stimuli in the environment that could worsen sinus infections. If you have any allergies, have them treated immediately, and increase the moisture in your body by drinking a lot of fluids. Your allergies, if any, could make the body more sensitive to certain irritants in the system, to say little of your nasal passages possibly getting even more inflamed.
